COMMANDER'S CORNER |

An editor's note - The last contact I had with the Commander, "Goose" Gander he told me he would be out of town, out of the country as a matter of fact, very hush, hush if you know what I mean. There is an election for our post officers coming up. Nominations can be placed at the next membership meeting on March 4th. If you think you want to consider a nomination for yourself or someone else, be at the meeting. The Internet site VFW.ORG I'm sure will give info on requirements for the various offices, you can even call them toll free 1-800-963-3180. If that doesn't help there's always our current officers. Now a word from our: Jr. Vice Commander I would like to thank everyone that came out and brought food for the Super bowl party. A good time was had by all. There is a bowling tournament on Saturday starting at 2pm. Sign-up is from 1pm to 1:45. This open to all VFW member's March 3rd we're doing Scotch doubles. This should be a good time, it will be the luck of the draw. March 22nd is Horseshoes at Goose Creek. We need support so we can get our trophy back.

Another month has gone by and our term is almost at an end. February was a great month as the rest of the months have shown. Again, thank you to all of you, we have the best Auxiliary and I am very proud to a part of that. Please keep up the good work and always know we need each and everyone of you as a Volunteer to keep us a successful Auxiliary. Our Hospital Visit was very sad. Please ladies always remember we are here for our Veterans and putting a smile on their face is one of our main goals and for those of you who do go to visit on our Hospital visit know exactly what I mean. Our next visit will be March 9, 2008, we will leave the Post promptly at noon, so please put it on your calendar. We always welcome new members, young and old! Congratulations to Ladson VFW Ladies Auxiliary, we did it, we became 100% as of February 20, 2008. To all our Chairmen who have worked so hard this whole year, now you will qualify for awards. Thank you for all your dedication and hard work. Happy St. Patrick's Day to all! April 1st will be our Elections of new Officers. Please plan on attending and voting for the right candidates for the job. Remember, we need to have sisters who will do the office they accept and give 100% plus to complete this her whole term. We all know there is a lot of responsibility and we know to be an Officer, it requires that extra step, so let's vote in the right candidate for the position. Our District meeting went very well. Thank you to all our sisters who joined us at Dorchester VFW and a big thank you to the Commander and President and anyone else for their hard work in the preparation of the meal and the hospitality. It was nice having our Department President Corrine Morris join our meeting. Once again Ladson Auxiliary came through we had thirteen members including myself, thank you so much sisters for being there. Upcoming dates to remember are as follows:
April 6th - COA at Headquarters beginning 10AM
Yours in friendship and sisterhood,

The Grand was outstanding. The food was excellent. Thank you Jackie Brooks and Jackie Martin for cooking the pig. It was delicious. Everyone had a good time. We had another great meeting. Elections went very well. Congratulations to all the newly elected officers. We all are looking forward to the installation on March 29th. Make sure to mark your calendars. The next hospital visit will be on March 9th. We will leave the post at 12:00. This is also the first day of day light savings. So be sure to set your clocks up an hour early. If you are going to try to be a clown remember you will need three visits before the end of the year. Remember our men in white. Pray for our nation. God Bless all.
Hugs to all,

Membership renewals are lagging from this time last year, as of this writing we stand at 87.76% or 860 members compared with a total of 980 last year. We do have some new members coming in but over 100 annual members have yet to pay their dues. If you know of any one who has not yet paid please urge them to either mail their dues to National or drop them off at the post. While on the subject of membership, one of the items that we have been lax in is having any new members sign the back of the application, this is a requirement and I ask any of you who sign up a new member to please ensure that the signature line on the back is filled in, also you, the recruiter, should also sign the application to get proper recognition by National. As mentioned in the February newsletter, nominations for the 2008-2009 post year will be opened at the March meeting and I published a portion of the responsibilities of the Post Quartermaster. Here are a few more of his/her duties as Quartermaster: Taking over as Quartermaster Before a new Post Quartermaster takes up the duties, his or her predecessor must be given a "clean slate: by the Post Trustees or auditors. Never, under any circumstances, accept the responsibility for Post funds before this is done. You want to avoid picking up a headache from someone else. Remember, you are bonded, and, once you take over officially, you will be the guy "in the middle" if the deck has not been cleared beforehand. Before you undertake any business as the new Post Quartermaster, check with the bank in which Post funds are deposited to satisfy yourself the funds are correct and in order. Be sure that proper signature cards are on file with the bank with specimen signatures of all persons authorized to make and endorse checks on behalf of the Post. When new officers are elected the new signatures must be provided to the bank. Get the forms from the bank and see that they are signed by the proper officers and sent to the bank. You should deposit money and draw checks for disbursements for authorized Post expenses. Of course, the volume of your bank activity will depend on the size of your Post and the level of activity. A Quartermaster should make deposits at regular intervals. It is a bad practice to let checks and money accumulate. Get them in the bank as soon as possible. In making deposits it is a better practice to put what you have received into the bank in the same physical form in which you received it. Coins and bills should be deposited as such and checks and negotiable paper must be deposited in the same manner. By putting your receipts in the bank in the same form in which they appear in your ledger, the deposit slips can easily be checked against your ledger for verification and errors can be more easily located. No checks or other negotiable paper received by the Post Quartermaster should be endorsed to a third party or cashed. They should be deposited in the Post account. No bills should be paid in cash. All disbursements should be by check only. This assures an adequate, accurate record."
Any person who may be planning to run for Quartermaster can see me and I will
be happy to show them our records and also give them a copy of the material I
have quoted in this and last month's newsletter, plus another three or four
pages. As all of the post's books are maintained on computers, a working
knowledge of computers and various computer programs is a necessity.

The Post and Courier (Feb 5th) ran an article by Andrew Taylor of the Associated Press on large numbers and president Bush's proposed record 3.1 trillion dollar budget.
It asked if you imagine 3 trillion (3,000,000,000,000) ? I can't. Counting at a rate of one number a second it said it would take almost 95 thousand years to count to 3 trillion. You can't count that high, its impossible.
The national debit is around 9 trillion, give or take. I'll leave you to ponder the power of spending and borrowing for a national budget and how it affects you.
I found help here on large numbers:
