April 2009

From The Commander

I would like to thank all my officers and comrades that supported the post and me this year.  I wish to also thank the Ladies because without their support we would not have accomplished as much as we have this year.  I do want to wish the newly elected officers luck in their year as officers of the Post.  I hope the Ladies and Comrades will support them as much as you have supported Anna and me.  I have enjoyed being your commander this year and having fun with everyone.

We will be having a post clean up in the next couple of months.  The date will be in the next news letter.

The Post needs to keep growing in membership and get some new members involved in the post activities.  We need more volunteers to help out with different functions.

The VFW has a hospital visit this month.  Hope to have several comrades attend.

Commander,
Jackie Martin

From The President

We have had a busy month.  Everyone has been talking about the great time all had at the Mardi Gras.  Robin, you and your helpers did a great job for the Cancer Aid and Research.

We are still trying to get the 101% we need for membership.  I want to thank everyone who had gone out of their way to attempt the required amount we needed.  As I am writing this before the end of the month I cannot let you know how we did on membership.

We have several crochet laptops completed for the VA Hospital.  They are on display in the glass cabinet in the canteen.  Some of them have hats and booties to go together as a set and others are just the laptops.   I would like to get a picture of as many sisters that have been working on laptops to submit to the Ladies Auxiliary Magazine.  Our next date for the crochet social is going to be April 19, at 1 pm.

Up coming events for April:

April 7th Joint Meeting at 7:30 followed with ladies meeting (elections)

April 11th Easter egg hunt for Kids 1:00 to 3:00 pm Easter egg hunt for Adults 6:00 pm

April 12th  Hospital Visit, leave Post at noon

April 19th   Crochet social

Events for May:

May 2nd   Kentucky Derby

May 5th Joint meeting at 7:30 followed with ladies meeting

May 17th Crochet Social

We are still working on memberships.  I would like to thank everyone for getting renewals and new members.  Ladies if you are a new member we are always in need of new volunteers at the post.  See Mary Bain for Friday steak nights if you would like to work a steak night. We also work Wednesday's wings and Saturday breakfast.  I know the 1st Saturday can use some help once in a while.  See me if you would like to work with me on the 1st Saturday.

To all that are under the weather, I hope you feel better soon.  We would like to see you at the meetings if at all possible.

God bless you all and remember our men in white.

Anna Martin

On the House

I would like to take this time to thank two guys that you may or may not know take on a special job here at the post. JR and Don Staples come in once every two months, sooner if needed and clean our smoke eaters. This may not sound like a daunting task but these two guys spend hours taking down the filters from each one of the seven smoke eaters in the building and do a thorough cleaning. Thanks guys for a job well done.

We had a good year with our 4th Tuesday Soup and Salad nights and now for the summer months we are changing the menu to something different. To start the schedule off, on April 28th we are planning a Meatloaf menu with mashed potato's and corn with a little dose of salad. For each 4th Tuesday until the fall we are planning to have a different menu for you to enjoy.

Our annual 20/20 party was a big hit with 89 folks attending. The music this year was provided by Ken Becker Music and everyone had a good time dancing the night away. Phil did a great job with the corned beef and as usual it was excellent with plenty to go around. A hearty thanks to Bill and Rob for volunteering to assist Phil with the cooking and then the setup and take down of the serving line. Also many thanks to Shirley and Roxanne who setup the ballroom for the evening's festivities.

As you may have noticed from the flyers placed around the Canteen there will be a price increase for all sodas and drinks starting 1 April. We did not want to do this but as everyone well knows prices are rising on everything and unfortunately the post is not exempt. Thanks to everyone for your understanding.

Last but not least I would like to take this opportunity to talk about our kitchen. We have been doing very well with our sanitary inspections but lately we have become a little lax with cleanliness. I would ask each group that works the kitchen to take extra time and do a thorough clean up of the area. To keep our ratings up we must ensure the grills, cook top, ovens, prep tables and sinks are kept clean and sanitary. Also, anything that goes into the large refrigerator must be sealed (not covered with foil) and marked with the date it was put away. Anna and Sheila Martin did an excellent job of cleaning out the refrigerator throwing away old food, sealing and labeling what was left. A big Thank You for taking on that task. The last thing before turning out the lights is to empty the trash cans and mop the floor. If this is done after each use, the kitchen will continue to stay clean and sanitary.

As always it's you the volunteers who donate your time and energy to support our post. I wish I could name everyone in this letter but there are far too many to do so and I would not take a chance and miss any one. So Thank you from myself and the House Committee for all you do.

Planned upcoming events -

April 28th - Meatloaf Dinner.

May 2nd - Kentucky Derby Celebration.

Thanks and remember, the House Committee meetings are open to all members and we welcome you to sit in on our meetings.

Wednesday Wing Night Notes

As everyone who comes to partake in Wing Night knows our post has become extremely crowded with guests the last few months. So many, in fact, that unfortunately some have become unruly. Many of our post members have complained about the situation and asked that something be done. Therefore we have implemented the following rules:

Must show ID to enter. Anyone under the age of 21 will be marked with a hand stamp.

Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 21.

No alcoholic beverages will be served to anyone under the age of 21.

Anyone under the age of 21 caught with alcohol will be told to leave the premises.

No outside food or drink will be allowed on the property.

If you leave the building you will not be allowed back in.

Fire exits are for emergencies only. Entering or exiting through a fire exit will be grounds for immediate expulsion from the post.

Since these rules were put in place on the 4th of March we have had good comments and many "Thank Yous" from our members and guests.

We are looking for volunteers to help us on Wednesday nights to monitor the doors. There is a calendar posted on the wall in the kitchen to sign up. If you are available for a Wednesday please help us by putting your name on the list. Thanks in advance for your help.

House Committee Chairman

Can you imagine working at this outfit

It has a little over 500 employees with the following statistics:

29 have been accused of spousal abuse

7 have been arrested for fraud

19 have been accused of writing bad checks

117 have bankrupted at least two businesses

3 have been arrested for assault

71 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit

14 have been arrested on drug-related charges

8 have been arrested for shoplifting

21 are current defendants in lawsuits

In 1998 alone, 84 were stopped for drunk driving.

It's the 535 members of the United States Congress. The same group that cranks out hundreds of new laws designed to keep the rest of us in line.

The above eRumor is claimed to be factual but a bit misleading. It comes from a series of articles by the website Capitol Hill Blue (chblue.com) covering both past and present members of Congress
