Quartermaster's Log

Our membership stands at about 94%. Annual membership is slowly coming in, but we still have about 150 members who are in arrears. Many of these members will not renew this year. We as a post and from here to District, Department and National levels the need for members is critical, membership totals mean a lot when our national leaders try to increase (or even keep) our hard won benefits. The bottom line is that each of us must get behind membership, including ensuring that our annual members are paid to date.

There seems to be some misunderstanding about the time it takes from when an application is submitted and when the member actually receives his/her membership card. If an application is received shortly after a monthly meeting that application is held until the next regular meeting at which time it is presented to the membership for approval. Once approved the Quartermaster puts together the proper paperwork and forwards it to our national headquarters in Kansas City. All membership cards are issued by national and are sent directly to the new member's home. If you think that you have waited too long, by all means contact the Quartermaster who will check with national and try to find out the status of the application. Once the Quartermaster forwards the paperwork to national he/she has no further control. Your patience is appreciated. Remember to get the receipt portion of the application from the member who signed you up. That receipt shows that you are qualified to be a member and that you are awaiting your official membership card.

Quartermaster

On the House

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported the House Committee in 2008. We worked very hard on updating the Canteen By-Laws during the first part of our tenure. These were voted on and approved by the general membership and are posted in the game room.

We've started a number of weekly specials in '08 to include Margarita Mondays, Pizza Thursdays, Sunday afternoon "Billy" Burgers and reinstated Soup and Salad Night on the 4th Tuesday. Another item, 5th Tuesday dinner specials will be served on each month with five Tuesdays (March, June, September and December) so watch the newsletter for further announcements. Our first special was Liver and Onions on Saturday January 10th and all who attended enjoyed a great meal.

I would especially like to thank all the volunteers who donated their time to prep, cook, serve and clean up for these functions. These are not always easy chores and with the help of these dedicated volunteers we have been very successful in '08.

I am sure everyone reading this newsletter has heard when making suggestions or complaints to "Write it up and put it in the suggestion box". Every item placed in the suggestion box is discussed and acted upon at each House Committee meeting and the writer receives an answer within 10 working days of our meeting. So far, this has worked very well and the House Committee has received a number of good suggestions. The suggestion/complaint box is located on the left side of the Canteen next to the ATM machine. Please remember, your suggestion/complaint has to be signed for us to consider your write-up.

Planned upcoming events:

Sunday February 1st – Super Bowl party.

Saturday February 28th – Post Oyster Roast.

Saturday March 14th – 20/20 Party - Ken Becker Music Entertainment.

Thanks and remember, the House Committee meetings are open to all members and we welcome you to sit in on our meetings.

Ted Tufts
House Committee Chairman

Shakespeare's Hamlet

Neither a borrower nor a lender be;
For loan oft loses both itself and friend,
And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry.

Money… its only paper.

One definition describes it as an agreement between a borrower and a lender based on confidence and trust.
Lending money at any interest according to the church is the sin of usury considered as theft and dishonesty.

* * * * *

Who said that !

1.   "We have sort of become a nation of whiners."

2.   "The fundamentals of America's economy are strong."

3.   "I can see Russia from my house!"

4.   In response to a picture in an ad : "I'll see you at the debates..."

5.   Explaining $700 billion bailout: "It's not based on any particular data point, we just wanted to choose a really large number." U.S. ?

And at his confirmation hearing, Attorney General Nominee Eric Holder said as far as he is concerned, waterboarding is torture. And Treasury secretary nominee Tim Geithner said, "So is paying taxes." ~ Jay Leno

But I think everybody has warm feelings for George Bush now. He held his final press conference yesterday. He admitted — it takes a big man to do this — he admitted that a couple things didn't go according to plan. A couple of things went haywire. His first term and his second term.. Those two things. ~ David Letterman

This morning, Barack Obama entered the Oval Office for the first time as president and he spent 10 minutes alone. Yep. Shows you how things have changed. When President Bush spent 10 minutes alone in the Oval Office, it was called a time-out. ~ Conan O'Brien
