"Democracy is not a spectator sport." Our national commander urges us to participate.

VFW: Government should help employers
http://www.vfw.org/index.cfm?fa=news.newsDtl&did=4856

WASHINGTON, Dec. 8, 2008--The nation's oldest major veterans' organization is urging its 2.2 million members to contact Congress and urge them to help America's businesses stay in business.

"The image that is the United States of America is one of strength, compassion and stability, yet this financial crisis is undermining our ability as a nation to think positively about the future," said Glen M. Gardner, Jr., the national commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. and its Auxiliaries.

"The debate in Washington is about Wall Street and Detroit, but the true debate is on Main Street, where confidence is at a critical point because the crisis is affecting everyone, to include veterans and their families who are employed in industries affected the most, or who own small businesses and property."

Gardner, a Vietnam veteran from Round Rock, Texas, is now asking the 2.2 million VFW and auxiliary members to contact their elected officials in Congress and urge their support to work with the administration in a bipartisan manner to help America get working again.

"America became a superpower in the last century because of an economic engine that enabled our military to win its wars," he said. "We absolutely cannot allow our industrial capacity to diminish to the point that we are dependent upon other nations to arm our military, employ our workers or outright own us."

Quartermaster's Log

Membership!!! That has to be our keyword! We still have 170 unpaid annual members and the prospects of reaching some of them is from slim to none. National shows the post as having 1006 members. All members in arrears will be dropped from the rolls as of 31 December 2008 and will need to be signed in by a member in good standing to be served at the canteen or to attend meetings, etc.

I am repeating last month's section on Life Membership: The Life Membership Installment Plan allows you to obtain a VFW Life Membership by paying the fee in 12 or 24 monthly installments instead of all at once. This makes the Life Membership fee easier to budget. To enroll, complete an enrollment form (see the Quartermaster). Mail in the form along with payment of $35.00 (check or credit card) to the national headquarters. (Again, see the Quartermaster) The $35 keeps you in good standing during the installment period. It is not applied toward the total amount due. After the initial payment of $35, you will have 11 payments for the 12-month plan or 23 payments for the 24-month plan remaining.

Upon enrollment, you will receive a "Provisional Life" membership card, indicating membership in good standing with the installment plan. Each month you will receive an invoice for payment. You can pay the monthly amount or pay in full. The monthly fee collected includes a $1.75 administrative fee to assist in covering the cost of monthly billing statements. Payment may be by check or credit card.

A "payoff amount" will be printed on each monthly invoice, allowing you the option to pay in full. If you pay off early, no additional monthly administrative fees will be collected.

A permanent Life Membership will be issued when the Life Membership fees have been paid in full. Once you are a Life Member, you will never pay dues again.

The information printed above was obtained from a recent paper received from National Headquarters. If you have any questions that you feel cannot be answered at our post, please call the Veterans of Foreign Wars at (800) 963-3180, and ask for Life Membership.

Notes from the webmaster:

Hope Santa was as good to you as he was to me. He knew that my computer monitor screen was going bad and gave me a nice new Wide Screen Liquid Crystal Display. What a difference! I've spent hours getting the settings set for my eyes, now I'm making adjustments to the website pages to make them more compatible with the newer monitors that I believe most folks have.

If you print the calendars that are available on our site you may want to do a print preview before hitting the print button. With all the various printers out there and the differences between browsers like Firefox and Explorer I can't possibly give you specific settings to use to print a nice Post Calendar for your refrigerator. In order to save trees and ink, use the print preview and check the margins etc. For help the help file, Google, or Yahoo can usually be helpful.

When you're web surfing and pages appear too small or too large you can hold the Ctrl Key and use the mouse roller (the wheel between the left and right clickers) to adjust the page size. If that doesn't work in your browser click on View and use Zoom (Firefox) or Text Size (Explorer) to adjust pages.

I hope this is helpful and may your web surfing be a joyous experience.

In updating our website I noticed that our pictures page wasn't working, please contact me if you see any problems on our pages! I found the problem on our pictures page; our Internet Service Provider freeservers.com inserts various scripts on free pages. They inserted a script right in the middle of our script for viewing pictures which crashed our free page. I've contacted freeservers but I haven't received a response yet.

Perhaps it's time for the post to consider purchasing our Internet address name vfwpost3433.com. When I log onto the server it says we've been up and running for 402 weeks, that's going on 8 years. I've been paying $25 a year to eliminate the pop-up ads but that still doesn't give us a full service website and we encounter problems such as the current one. I think we can get what we need for about $100 a year.

Now you have something to think about in the coming year!

Happy New Year,
Sam Smith
