Another year is about to begin. I hope it will be a better one than last
year. I would like to thank everyone that has supported my officers and
chairman. I know we will have a better year this year.
We are here for the Men in Beds of White. We have to try to get more to attend
the hospital visits. We go every other month for about 2 hrs. This is not
much time, considering they have given so much. Please try to attend our next
hospital visit.
The Post has been informed about people trying to scam money from Posts in the
Low country. So beware of this in the future. Be sure you know the people and
make sure they are members of the VFW or Auxiliary in good standing. We will
attempt to help the honest ones, but we cannot help if they are not in good
standing. We should consider sending them to their post or at least contact
their post before we give our money to them.
We are in need of need of volunteers for wing night and breakfast. We have
some volunteers working two and three weeks each month. If you can help,
please sign up. There is a list on orange paper posted in the kitchen of the
new bulletin board by the coffee pot. If you can only work occasionally, sign
up and state you are an occasional worker, or put to call you if you are needed.
Our last Quarter Auction was a huge success!!! We are having an adult one on
the 12Th of September. If you have something new that you would like to donate
to the Quarter Auction please contact Mary Bain or myself. We made money last
time because of the donations given by everyone. Thank you goes out to Bobbie
for her Afghans. They were the items with the highest bids. Thank you Mary
for a great idea.

From our Hospital Chairman
|
|
Hello to everyone once again. Our last Hospital Visit consisted of 6 people, 2
Veterans from our Post, 1 Veteran from Post 3142 and 3 Ladies Auxiliary members
from our Post. Please try to take time out of your busy schedule and visit
with us on July 12, 2009. It is only 2 hours out of your day; just remember
how many hours our Veterans served our Country. We will be leaving the Post
promptly at 12 noon. We are here for our Veterans and I just can't get this
point across enough. We need to keep in touch with our ill Veterans and let
them know we always think about them and wish them well. It is such a pleasure
seeing them smile even for a moment. We have one of our members, Mr. Harold
Sedivy in the Nursing Home section of the VA Hospital and you just don't know
how it feels to see him smile and to talk with him for awhile. You never will
know the warm feeling you get inside until you go and visit our Veterans. Hope
to see everyone on the 12th of July.
I hope no one gets offended by this article; I just want to stress the
importance of our visit with our Veterans.
Sincerely,
Carrie A. Conyers

S.C. Physically Handicapped Chapter
Last month I put an article in the Newsletter concerning our S.C. Handicapped
Chapter 3433. We are still trying to get this Chapter started. I know there
are applications out there and I will have a folder behind the bar kept in the
same accordion folder with our other Membership cards for those interested in
joining. If you know of anyone interested in joining, they can pick up an
application at the VFW, just ask the Bartender in Charge to please give you an
application. There are no dues at this time. We really need to get this
Chapter started as soon as we can so we can be installed for the Term
2009-2010. Please feel free to contact me @ 843/851-1632 if you have any
questions and I will answer what I know and I will find the right answer to
those questions I don't know.
Sincerely,
Carrie A. Conyers

On the House
We had a good showing with lots of participation at our volunteer meeting. If
you missed the meeting, we still need your help. Please contact Commander
Jackie Martin or myself to see what is best for you. If you don't join the
teams you are missing a great time with a lot of laughs, yes we have a GREAT
time. Come join the fun. There's a place for everyone.
We had some great money saving suggestions and as you may have noticed we have
already implemented a number of these ideas. It was noted that during wing
night there were lots full containers of ketchup, ranch dressing and celery as
well as wads of napkins being thrown away. To eliminate this waste we are no
longer putting out bulk ketchup and ranch dressing and asking each person if
they would like celery when taking wing orders. A suggestion to save napkins
was to place paper towel holders with table numbers on each table. Jerry
Belding took the idea and improved it to add salt and pepper holes to keep all
in one place. Jerry built 37 in record time and we started using them in June.
Yes, we are making some additional work for ourselves and yes, it is going to
take some time to adjust but so far it looks like all these ideas are paying
off and many thanks to the all who had a hand in suggesting them. A "BIG, BIG
Thank You" goes out to Harriet Smith and Deb Stempin for volunteering to
prepare the individual servings and making sure we have enough of each.
Jackie Brooks and Mike O'Connell have been actively working the plans for the
July 4th celebration and they are coming along nicely. We start at 1pm and
last until 5pm. Last year the jump castle and dunk tank were big hits so we
have them again. Other events on tap are face painting, balloon toss, cake
walk and the "Jail" as well as hamburgers, hotdogs and all the fixin's starting
at 3pm. We will be decorating the hall after steak night on Friday July 3rd so
if you are able to help come on out and give us a hand. Although the 4th is on
Saturday we are still planning breakfast from 9 to 11 so come on out and make a
day of it and celebrate the 4th with the post.
Our 4th Tuesday meal this month is a special dish prepared by our own Ladies
Auxiliary President Anna Martin. Anna is working a meal she says is a family
favorite and goes fast so prepare to arrive early and get a good seat.
The committee is actively working on the post Independence Day celebration. If
you are able to volunteer to help with the festivities please contact one of
our event planners, Mike O'Connell or Jackie Brooks who will gladly accept help.

A role model…
is a good example for other people to follow.
I was a brand new helicopter pilot when I met Major Crandall the company
commander who was getting ready to leave for home. Both Major Crandall and his
second in command Captain Ed 'too tall to fly' Freeman, who was depicted in the
movie 'We were soldiers once and young', were awarded the Medal of Honor
reflecting great credit upon themselves, their unit, and the United States
Army.
www.history.army.mil/html/moh/vietnam-a-l.html
Did you wonder who that person was awarded the Medal of Honor pictured in our
canteen? His son Mike Williams is a member of our post. Additionally Post
member Bill Shultz served with him. Boatswain's Mate First Class James E.
Williams, "his extraordinary heroism and exemplary fighting spirit in the face
of grave risks inspired the efforts of his men to defeat a larger enemy force,
and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service."

We all want to be good role models to inspire others to follow…
Our Post sponsors
Boy Scout Troop 752 and Venture Crew 752
. They're working to
present themselves as good examples, role models for others to follow. They
work the 4th Saturday Breakfast at the VFW as a fund raiser to help pay for
their camping expenses… propane, trailer, gas, and camping fees. The only money
they receive for this fund raiser comes from the breakfast patron's tips. Don't
let them down, you know what to do.
I want to thank Phil Gardner, Frank Blaszak, and Robin Pittman for their input
and inspiration for this article ~ " A role model… ".

On a crowded bus, a man noticed that another man sitting down had his eyes
closed. Surprised he asked "what's the matter? Are you sick or something?" "No,
I'm okay. It's just that I hate to see old ladies standing.
