Quartermaster's Log

We have past the 100% membership goal and we now stand a good chance of becoming an All-State Post again. This does not come without a lot of help from our members. We still need to recruit more members, and there are plenty in our neighborhoods who are eligible, all each of us have to do is recruit just one new member and we would be the largest post in South Carolina. At the present time we stand at 1019 members, this seems good but, this count also includes some 100 to 150 non-paying members. Many of our members have moved from the area and have not kept the post advised of their new addresses and we have no way of contacting them. If anyone happens to know of a member who has recently (or not-so-recently) moved please let us know.

We have received several applications for membership only to find out that the applicant does not have the proper qualifications; this leaves us with the unpleasant duty of having to notify a person who thinks he will become a member that he/she is ineligible. Please check to see that their proof of eligibility has a campaign ribbon showing eligibility, a listing is posted on the door to the ballroom. Thank you.

On the House

As we come to the end of another year, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the past year's House Committee. Consisting of Len Stempin, Jackie Brooks, Jerry Belding, Mike O'Conner, Mike Carlson, Betty Hilliard, Commander Jackie Martin and Quartermaster Phil Gardner. They worked many hours to help make our post a better place. Thank you for all you have done.

Our 5Th Tuesday Barbequed Rib special on March 31st was a huge success. Many thanks to Lula and Willie Campbell for cooking an outstanding dinner as well as Shirley Houck and Beth Tufts for helping to setup and serve. As usual, everyone who came out to enjoy the dinner had high praise for the Campbell's cooking abilities and due their popularity, Lula and Willie have graciously agreed to prepare our next 5Th Tuesday dinner to be held in June. The menu is forth coming and it's going to be fantastic.

In keeping with our 4Th Tuesday meal tradition, this month's menu is going to be Meatloaf, mashed potatoes and ***gravy corn*** is this gravy corn or gravy and corn? May be better as mashed potatoes with gravy and corn************. It took some doing but Billy (you may know him as "Billy" Burger) will be our chief cook and if the meatloaf is anything like his burgers it will be a super meal. It's that time of the year to spruce up the Post and tidy up the Canteen once again. We are planning a Post and Canteen cleanup party so when you see the posters please try to make room in your schedule to help us out.

Last but not least, please help me welcome our newest bartender Janice Cooper. Janice is a 25 year resident of Ladson, loves to surf the Internet, read mystery books and splurge on her granddaughters. Please make her feel at home by introducing yourself and welcoming her to our post.

Planned upcoming events –
  • Post/Canteen Cleanup - TBA
  • May 1st - Loyalty Day
  • May 2nd - Kentucky Derby Celebration.
  • May 9th - Installation of Officers.
  • May 26th - 4Th Tuesday Dinner - TBA
  • June 30th - 5th Tuesday Special.
Thanks and remember, the House Committee meetings are open to all members and we welcome you to sit in on our meetings.

This Month in Military History

The Month of May has its notable events, and we begin by reminding everyone that this May 25, 2009, Memorial Day will be celebrated as a day to remember the men and women who gave their lives for peace and prosperity. Without the sacrifices of the men and women who serve their country in the armed services, both in peace and in war, here and around the world, there would be no security against the tyranny that engulfs much of the world.

  • May 1801 - First Barbary War: Tripoli, Tangier, Algiers and Tunis declare war on the United States
  • May 20-21, 1813 - Napoleonic Wars: Prussian and Russian forces are beaten at the Battle of Bautzen
  • May 8-9, 1846 - Mexican-American War: US forces under General Zachary Taylor defeat the Mexicans at the Battle of Palo Alto and the Battle of Resaca de la Palma
  • May 10, 1871 - Franco-Prussian War: The Treaty of Frankfurt ends the conflict in Prussian victory
  • May 31, 1902 - Second Boer War: Fighting ends with the Treaty of Vereeniging
  • May 7, 1936 - Second Italo-Abyssinian War: Fighting ends with the capture of Addis Ababa and the Italian annexation of the country
  • May 7, 1945 - World War II: Nazi Germany surrenders to the Allies, ending the war in Europe
  • May 7, 1954 - First Indochina War: The French fortress at Dien Bien Phu falls effectively ending the war
  • May 15 ,1963 - Last and longest of the Project Mercury flights occurred. Major Leroy Gordon Cooper Jr. USAF, orbited the earth 22 times in an MA-9 "Faith-7" capsule.
  • May 15, 1975 - Forty-one men died during the rescue mission of the U.S. registered container ship SS Mayaguez.

I would just like to say

We had a very disappointing year as far as our Hospital visits went. Please remember we are here for our Veterans and please join us for our Hospital Visits. We go every other month and the MOC/MOCA goes the remaining months.  We all need to have visitors when we are ill.  We all know it is just a couple of hours out of our days to make someone smile, even if just for a moment.  Remember, you may have to go the VA Hospital and you know as well as we all do that we need people to make our days go by happier and we need for our Veterans to always remember they are never forgotten.  Please try to join us at our next visit.  We will be going on the 1st Sunday in June.  We normally go on the 2nd Sunday of each month, but due to the Grand being held in Greenville, we have changed the date.  We leave the Post at noon sharp and we really have an enjoyable time visiting with our Veterans.  We need both Veterans and Sisters to join us for our visits.

Thank you and see you next month for our visit.

Test Preparation that works

Brought to you by Dorchester County library. Go to www.dcl.lib.sc.us (At the time of uploading this link was not working.)

I found it on a bookmark. You'll need to get a library card and a password. Click on "Databases" and go to "Learning Express". You can take practice tests online for Civil Service Careers, GED, SAT, Citizenship and more. Plus you can take a variety of courses... reading, writing, and arithmetic. You might know somebody that this might help.

The South Carolina Code of Laws Title 16 www.scstatehouse.gov under Crimes and Offenses has Chapter 19 for Gambling and lotteries… playing cards in a tavern including back rooms can get you arrested, jailed and fined.
